The rug mistake almost everyone makes

A rug can be beautiful and still make a room feel slightly off.

One of the most common reasons? It is too small for the furniture around it.

A rug should help connect the pieces in a room. When it floats in the middle with the sofa and chairs sitting completely outside it, the seating can look disconnected and the room may feel smaller than it really is.

For a living room, a good starting point is to choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the main seating pieces to sit on it. In a larger room, having all the furniture legs on the rug can create an even more grounded look.

Before buying, try this simple trick: use painter's tape to mark the rug dimensions on the floor.

Then stand back and look at the whole room. Does the taped area connect the sofa and chairs? Does it suit the scale of the room? Does it leave a comfortable border of flooring around it?

This takes just a few minutes and can prevent an expensive sizing mistake.

And remember - a larger rug does not necessarily make a room feel crowded. Quite often, it does the opposite. It helps the furniture feel connected and makes the whole room look more settled.
